In Love with the Monsters

Opening my laptop, I click through emails and scroll through bits of research. I'm still trying to connect Shiela Watkins with her family so she can escape her current situation. Finding a few leads, I reach out to connect them, using an alternate email account. Then I update Shiela and help her, from a distance, figure out what to do next, holding in anger at her husband the entire time.

With men like these, men who physically abuse women they love, it usually starts with emotional and verbal abuse. By the time they escalate to actually raising a fist, they've hollowed out the women who love them so much that they rarely fight back, and feel awful if they do. Shiela has this timid, apologetic way to her as she quickly sends emails back to me—a phone call is too risky when her husband could overhear—and I do all I can to bolster her confidence.

But first, I make sure she has an appointment to head down to the nearest women's clinic and get a birth control implant inserted into her upper arm. The only thing worse for her than trying to leave an abusive prick would be getting stuck with him for eighteen years.

Once she reassures me she has an appointment scheduled, I look for other work to take care of, but very little of it piques my interest. Most of these jobs would require face time, and the heavy bracelet around my ankle would prevent any of it. The little I can do remotely is small time for peanuts and boring as shit. I don't want to spend all day twiddling my thumbs and doing criminal background checks while Baird is out there doing who knows what, and I'm stuck inside for no good reason. Just sitting here is going to make me lose my mind.

Which is how I find myself digging around in the storage closet and searching through the basement until I get the supplies I need: the mechanical sander, several blocks of sandpaper, a pair of tough worker's gloves, some wood polish, cleaning supplies, and a bucket of unopened stain. Setting it all down on the back porch, I head back into the dining room and stare at the bloodstained table.

This is where it all started. Where, just days ago, my four dead ex-boyfriends came back to life just as I was getting shot. Where I was laid down on the wood table and had surgery performed on me by one of those dead exes; then, days later, where my aunt put the new anti-demonic energy tattoo on me.

Last night, we removed the demon from Christopher's body, and I dared to use magic for the first time since Lilith took me over. Now the table's surface is so coated in blood, ink stains, and even gouges from the possessed thrashing that it looks pitted and disgusting. If I make it look new again, maybe I'll feel new again too.

Grabbing one end of the table, I lift it up—and nearly drop the thing on my toes it's so heavy.
